Murray’s Sleepless Nights Almost Over

Adam Murray cares as much about Mansfield as many, some would say any, and our predicament in recent weeks when we couldn’t buy a point let alone get any was getting to him.

In the wake of our massive win over Tranmere on Tuesday he’s admitted, when talking to the media after the game, that he was suffering with nerves going into that big game as he knew how important it was, for both sides, but from our point of view could have literally been the difference between staying up and going down.

It’s the first time, as a manager, for him that he’s had such a high-pressure game and he’s not afraid to admit that it got to him.

‘I felt sick and anxious, there was a little bit of worry and a little excitement.

‘It was the first game as a manager where something’s really been riding on it and I haven’t been able to go out there and carry the baton myself.’

That one-nil win at the One Call Stadium leaves us, literally, on the brink of League 2 safety. Mathematically we’ve still got some work to do but to all intent and purpose it should be enough.

Murray feels that it got to him more because he cares so much, unlike some within the game who see what they do as ‘a job’ and nothing more it’s more to him with us than just a job. Perhaps he puts more pressure on himself but in doing so the good times are worth so much more.

‘I was sitting with my wife a couple of days ago and I said ‘I wish I didn’t care so much’. I don’t want to let the club down.

‘I have spoken to some managers over the last four months and they are in it for a job, but this isn’t just a job.

‘For me it’s everything and that’s the pressure I put on myself, so when you do get wins like this it is magnified by a million per cent.’

You’re not letting anyone down Adam, Football League survival is what you were tasked with doing and this is all but done now and I’m sure you’ll take what you’re learning on the job into next season and that will make the job you enjoy doing all the more enjoyable!
