Mansfield Town made it three wins out of three after a 2-1 victory over Chester City at Field Mill on Tuesday night. Goals from Simon Brown (27) and Alex John-Baptiste (82) cancelled out Brad Maylett’s ninth minute strike.

Early punches were dealt by Laurence Wilson for Chester and Simon Brown for the home side.

A comedy of errors allowed Chester a gift of a first goal, as Jason White hesitated and Jon-Olaf Hjelde failed to clear, leaving Maylett with a simple finish.

Chester looked comfortable, without creating, before Mansfield sprung to life. First Barry Conlon headed over Nathan Arnold’s corner, and then came the equaliser.

An amazing piece of vision, combined with a sublime pass from Barry Conlon released Simon Brown, and after a good first touch he smashed the ball under the opposing ‘keeper.

In the second half Arnold had a good chance blocked, and then Jason White produced a magnificent save to turn Wilson’s drive past the woodwork.

It was the introduction of Matthew Hamshaw on the hour mark that turned the game however, and after creating chances for 20 minutes, it was his corner that was met by Alex John-Baptiste’s header in the 82nd minute.

Hamshaw also had a flashy shot go just wide and have a penalty appeal turned down, but the lead stayed at one, as Mansfield won a scrappy game on the whole by a 2-1 scoreline.
