Caretaker boss Peter Shirtliff was full of praise for the team yesterday despite the defeat to Millwall in the Carling Cup.

Mansfield went down 3-2 in the tie but it’s been a good run for the club, especially after seeing off Stoke and Southampton in previous rounds.

Despite Millwall taking a two goal lead, Mansfield didn’t give up and two goals within 60 seconds from Simon Brown and Richie Barker had the teams back on level teams. Unfortunately Millwall player Dave Livermore’s last gasp winner put Mansfield out of the Cup…but spirits are still high.

‘We did not deserve to lose that game, no way, because we were outstanding all night.

‘I told the players in the dressing room after the game that if we keep the spirit and those performance levels then we’re going to be flying up the league table and the reaction of the fans shows you what they thought of the players too.

‘What spirit we showed to come back from 2-0 down and that shows you the strides we’re making here.’
