A late goal wasn’t enough to spark a Mansfield comeback on Saturday afternoon as we lost to 2-1 to Southend United.

Injuries had bitten hard recently but we ground out some results, mainly draws, but at the One Call Stadium this time round we were beaten

Southend could have been two-up inside 15-mintues with better finishing, Barry Corr missing from close range and Myles Weston having an effort blocked, although it wasn’t long before they did breakthrough.

Eventually Ryan Leonard (17) did put the visitors ahead when he blasted home, via the bar, as Southend’s dominance and superior confidence made a difference.

Sascha Studer has had some great games recently and he made two very good saves again before the break to make sure Corr couldn’t add to the score before the break.

Studer was beating as time ran out in the second half by David Worrall (69) to make it two and leave us with a mountain to climb.

We gave ourselves hope when Ollie Palmer (78) pulled one back with 12-minutes to play but it wasn’t enough with the equaliser unable to be found.
