Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans was surprised to see one end of the stands at Crewe overflowing with visiting supporters at the weekend.

The lovely named ‘Ice Cream Van’ stand, which runs one length of the pitch at Gresty Road, was full of 1,392 Stags supporters, cheering their side on for the opening day of the season, and willing them to come back twice in the 2-2 draw.

‘I came out the tunnel before kick-off and I was really surprised, but thank you to everyone. I think they’ve seen, when I first came into the club, I said I’d build a team that becomes a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions.’ Evans told the official Mansfield Town website

The Stags had shifted over 900 tickets ahead of the game on Saturday, with some still opting to pay on the day.

Despite the large following, the day also went off peacefully, showing we can all get away with 3pm kick offs.
